KAST offers a long-term vision for science and technology development through providing consultation and recommendations on national science and technology policy on the foundation of accumulated professional knowledge of the nation's leading scientists and engineers. It is also contributing to increasing Korea's science and technology capabilities in the 21st century by evaluating and recommending policy priorities and consulting for balanced R&D planning based on objective studies and public consensus.

KAST performs evaluation and consultation on science and technology related programs and policies of various ministries in the government, makes assessment of long-term demands for science and technology, and devises appropriate measures to meet the demands efficiently.

KAST evaluates research outcome of domestic researchers and research institutes, and conducts research for the government in developing new policies on science and technology.

* The KAST Roundtable Discussions series is designed to identify obstacles to the development of science and technology, and to develop means of eliminating obstacles, through discussions with experts from industries, academia, research institutes and political circles, which can aid in formulating a long-term vision and a new development strategy.
* For the discussion, top management officers are invited from the science and technology related ministries of the government as keynote speakers and their comments are publicized through mass media. The discussion records are published under the title "What Are the Problems with Our Science and Technology?" and distributed among the government agencies and other related organizations to stimulate the development of improvement measures and policies.

KAST develops research projects on the problems identified through the KAST Roundtable Discussions and makes recommendations to the government on the basis of the project results.
